9 Comfort Foods You MUST Have In Karachi Winters
First of all, we don’t appreciate how people don’t take winters in Karachi SERIOUSLY. Like hello, it’s a season. So what if it hardly lasts two weeks but damn those two weeks mean you can sit outdoors and enjoy the best thing on Earth which is Karachi food.
Here’s what we have been hogging on this winter and feel that you must check ’em out too:
1- CHICKEN CORN SOUP
Yes, everybody asks you to go get soup but we feel like Karachi winters offers you an opportunity to really dig deep and find that perfect bowl of comforting soup which obviously has to come with either papri or prawn crackers.
Our favourite soup spots are Hot N Spicy and this famous spot in Pakistan Chowk.
2- STUFFED PARATHA
Stuffed parathas have pretty much taken every corner of Karachi hostage and now come with all sorts of fillings: From Nutella, Banana and Oreos to Tandoori chicken. Whatever your favourite filling might be, this is the perfect opportunity to make that chai paratha plan with your homies!
Our favourite paratha spots are Cloud Naan, Dera at Boat Basin or basically any dhaaba that is near your home.
3- HOT CHOCOLATE
It is SO difficult to get Hot Chocolate right. Most places fill the mug up with milk and it tastes like Ovaltine. However, when the chill in the air strikes what you really need is that intense dose of cocoa preferably with marshmallows on the side. We love this lotus and Candi biscuit concoction at FLOC – though our all-time favourite hot chocolate spot in the city has to be Butler’s.
4- TIKKA BIRYANI
Yes, biryani is basically what runs Karachi. That and chai, so it doesn’t make sense to categorise it as a winter food. However, TIKKA Biryani is what we feel you should have in winters. It takes your regular biryani session to another level and obviously the spiciness helps bring some of the warmth back in your life.
Our favourite tikka biryani spot is Biryani of the Seas.
5- CHEESY FRIES
We do want to go off and talk about what a thing of beauty this particular plate of cheesy fries is but in this case, we will just let the picture do the talking.
Go, get it at Jucy Lucy.
6- EGGS IN A SKILLET
There is no comfort in life without anda. Have it sunny side up with paratha, or poached with a side of sauteed mushrooms – you have to agree that eggs are one of the most underrated winter foods.
We particularly love this dish at Pantry, which is basically two fried eggs in a skillet served with baby potatoes and sausages.
7- A PLATE OF HOT, STEAMING NIHARI
You’re probably saying “Duh!” to this and so are we. We feel like it definitely deserves a space on this list though because so many of our favourite nihari spots are in danger of being taken away because of the anti-encroachment drive. The time to hog on to nihari is basically NOW.
8- A BOWL OF CHEESY PASTA
Is a list of comfort foods EVER complete without pasta? If you have a breakfast plan and let’s face it, who wakes early enough in winters to actually have breakfast, just head over to Xander’s for this creamy, cheesy bowl of Penne Pasta.
Our favourite pasta spots in city are: Xander’s & Amichi. Don’t forget to ask for extra sauce.
9- HUNTER BEEF BURGER
The hunter beef burger with cottage cheese at Hanifia is one thing that we are literally in love with and can’t ever imagine living without. The only thing is that it doesn’t photograph well but you get what we are trying to say right?
Undisputed king of hunter beef: Hanifia
