2019 saw some major food action unravel in Karachi. Between frenzied product launches and silent new entrants, a lot happened, a lot changed and a lot stayed the same.
Here are some of the food trends that we saw dominate last year!
1- DESSERTS BECAME INSTAGRAMMABLE AF
Lava pouring, Lotus melting, Candy Floss dissolving – 2019 saw desserts being decked up for the gram while also tasting pretty good.
In pictures:
- Lotus Pancakes – Nobby
- Korean Ice Cream, Bingsu
- Molten Lava – Delina
2- KETO MENUS WERE EVERYWHERE
People really took their resolutions of being fit seriously this year because there was a growing demand for healthy, nutritious food alongside keto food (which is a low-carb diet for those who are uninitiated).
Espresso, Chatterbox, Esquires, FLOC quickly adapted and had a keto menu in place. Some of the keto items I tried while not being on keto were as follows:
- Beef Goddess Burger – Pesto
- Cheese Tacos, FLOC
- Philly Steak Casserole – Esquires
3–
EVERYONE JUMPED ON THE DONUTS BANDWAGON
Have to credit Easy for making donuts great again in Karachi. However, Del Frio soon followed with their own line and then Yoshi’s brought their own take with mochi donuts (which have a delicious bubble gum texture and are also smoll). Now, we are hearing of a ODonuts…
4- CAFES TOOK FOOD FUSION A LITTLE TOO SERIOUSLY
At one hand, you gotta appreciate restaurants who are willing to change things up a bit but on the other, you kind of want to tell them that they are going a bit too far. LOL.
Some of the food fusions that I remember not being too offended by are as follows:
- Matkiccino – FLOC (a blend of coffee and gurr and almonds).
- Chicken Tikka Jacket Potato – Babamoo
- Dahi Barray With Slims
5- THE ESPRESSO COOKIE CHECK-IN CONTINUED
We seriously thought this cookie check-in will last at best a couple of weeks, but a few years down the line and almost going in to 2020 – the check-in lives on. Here’s to a free cookie! 😀

6- A NEW CHAI DHAABA OPENED UP EVERY 5 SECONDS

We have officially seen a Chai Waala, Chai Waali, Chotu Chai Wala, Mr Chaiwala, Mrs Chaiwala and it’s like… okay okay, we get it. We welcome you all because chai is life.
7- FRIED CHICKEN SCENE BECAME LIT

Mad Roosta brought the Nashville-style chicken to Karachi and out of all the new fried chicken entrants, this was my favourite. Other places that also opened up shop include Clucky’s and Chick Magnet.
8- JIGGLY JAPANESE CAKES
Credits: Uncle Tetsu Pakistan
This year was the year of asking “if your cake doesn’t jiggle, is it even a cake?”. Japanese cheese cakes really caught on, starting from Uncle Tetsu who are in Lahore. Easy introduced Japanese pancakes that did a mini jiggle but we are cool with that.
What remains to be seen is if this trend jiggles its way to 2020 or stops right here.
OVERALL, we gotta appreciate Karachi for always keeping the food scene LIT and INTERESTING.
Meanwhile, what is your take on all of these food trends? Which trend do you think should go and what are you okay with? Tell us!
